神池黍子产于山西省忻州市神池县，种植历史悠久。神池县独特的自然条件和高寒冷凉风沙大的特点，十分适合黍子的生长。黍子，性黏，常用来做黄糕、酿酒。黍子褪壳后本地人叫黄米，黄米可以做成各种传统美食；磨成面，谓之黄米面，又称糕面。用糕面做成的油糕，是本县人推崇的最隆重也是最传统的食品。逢年过节，油糕用来祭祀或家中有重要客人及逢重大节日，油糕也是必备佳品。油糕营养丰富，蛋白质含量高，口感绵软、筋道，吃了后很“管饱”，有民谚道“三十里莜面，四十里糕，十里荞面饿断腰”。
