神池胡麻产于山西省忻州市神池县，始种于东汉年间。清道光年间，兵部尚书祁隽澡《马首农言》中“油出神池、利民等处，每斤钱一百上下，溅至七十以上”。清光绪《神池县志》载：“胡麻，子肥大，其色紫黑，榨油最多、甚佳。”《中国实业志.山西卷》载：“民国二十四年（1953年），全县有46家油坊，榨油工人316人。资本3972万元，年加工胡麻118.1万公斤，产油35.5万公斤，产值9.12万元。” 目前，神池县胡麻种植面积达20万亩左右，年总产2.5万吨左右。神池胡麻特殊的产地环境，形成了独特的品质，加工的神池胡麻油被誉为“高山上的深海鱼油”；有“天天吃胡油，赛如活神仙”、“装满油罐罐，不愁钱串串”等神池民谣。2014年神池县被中国粮食行业协会授予“中国亚麻油籽之乡”称号。
