公元前十一世纪，在今牛寺乡南涅水村就设立了甲水县，辖区的王泉山、桃园、南牛寺一带盛产核桃，是县衙进贡皇上的佳品，皇上食之佳品，甚感兴趣。一日，皇上边吃核桃边聊天，谈起佛祖释迦牟尼来，就旨意大臣随县衙到甲水县，集中了全国石刻匠人在甲水县大规模开展石刻运动，石刻运动从释迦牟尼在娘肚里形成胚胎临终一生进行了石刻，一樽一个释迦牟尼故事。此石刻于50年代初从南涅水村出土，现存于县城二郎山“南涅水石刻陈列馆”，堪称“天一第一民间石刻”。至此，甲水县周边形成了以核桃为主的产业。史书载：沁县故县镇徐村有个人叫吴典，清朝时期的1698年担任了保和殿大学士兼刑部尚书。任职后的1703年，他回家探亲，返京时，挑选沁县营养最丰富、口感最好吃的南瓜子、核桃、小米带回京城，进贡给康熙皇帝，康熙皇帝吃后十分高兴，欣然吟道：“沁州三件宝：核桃、瓜子、吴阁老（沁州黄小米）”，至此，沁州南瓜子、沁州核桃、沁州黄小米就成了沁县的三大宝之一。每年将沁州南瓜子、沁州核桃、沁州黄小米作为贡品进贡皇宫，也就成了远近闻名的地方名产。沁州人因为他把南瓜籽、核桃、小米贡给康熙皇帝而成为名产，价值倍增，百姓收入增加，感恩尊称他为“阁老”，把康熙皇帝赐封的“沁州三件宝的沁州核桃、沁州南瓜子、吴阁老（指示沁州黄小米）”写进史书，编为沁县的人文历史。
