神池莜麦产于山西省忻州市神池县，种植历史悠久，据说莜麦最早起源于我国华北一带的高寒山区，神池县可能就是莜麦的最早发源地区之一。据《山西省统计年编》记载：民国二十四年（1935），神池莜麦种植面积36.2万亩，占到粮食作物总播面积的56.9%，总产130.32万公斤。建国后的统计数据显示，1949年到1970年，神池县的莜麦播种面积一直稳定在25万亩左右，最高年1964年达到27.53万亩。1971年到1990年20年中，播种面积有所减少，但神池莜麦远近闻名，1977年11月曾在神池召开过华北地区莜麦生产协作会议。2003年山西省政府把神池县列为建设优质小杂粮产区重点县，全县莜麦播种面积又逐年回升。
